Linuxhelp _ Technical Support _ Newbie need help

Alright, I love my ubuntu machine and I believe it runs something like 1.6 grub and checks my hard drive for me every 26 times or so.
Recently, it has found a file system error that makes the auto check fail.
It doesn't want to boot fully until I have run the check manually and I'm not that computer savvy.
It begins to set up a "maintenance shell" with something in "read only mode".
Then it tries to run some commands for me and runs into a big problem.

"apt-get: command not found. You can fix this by typing 'apt-get install apt'."

...

naturally, if I type this in, it tells me again that apt-get is not installed and that I can fix it with apt-get.
I have the "root@[my]-desktop" command line, but I don't know what to do with it.

Is there something I can do to install apt-get, or am I screwed and have to reinstall?

If I haven't given enough information about something, I'm sorry, but I'm only slightly computer literate.
