Could some answer these questions please? I'm a newbie.
1. How do you run a program in the 'background'?
2. If you have something in the background, how do you bring it forward? Do you send it back to background the same way?
3. I guess background is a 'process'. Are there more? What would they be called so I can learn more about them?
4. What is something called 'granddaddy' process? Sound

to put something in the background you use the "&" for example
for example to start mozilla in the background you would type at the
command prompt:
mozilla &

i think there is a way to bring it back to the forground...i remember
something when i took a unix course in college but i could be wrong

never heard of a granddaddy process though...
