cron is a time based scheduler. You can automatically run tasks and programs based upon time and date. Typically it is used for system maintenance and administration although it can be use for any purpose where you need to run a program at regular intervals.
If you need to regular run a program or regularly perform some task on your website then it could be of some benefit.

One good use of cron for a web server is using cron for routine back-ups. For example, schedule back-ups to be copied on another server, if something dies you'll have a recent copy of it.
You can also schedule a task to run after a reboot if it were to go down for any reason. For example, let's say rebootscripts.sh contained useful commands that are vital in running your website.
In cron:
@reboot /scripts/rebootscript.sh
