Linuxhelp _ Technical Support _ error: no such device...

Posted by: lautmalerei Oct 9 2015, 01:49 PM

Hello,

Today I installed Debian to a USB stick.

Now, when I try to boot my computer without the USB stick plugged in, I get the following message:

error: no such device: 9bc21e6d-c98b-43da-94dc-5b3e58339805.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>

I can only boot into Debian or Windows while I have the USB stick plugged into my computer.

How can I fix this? I am a newbie when it comes to Linux and would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

What happened is that grub (linux boot loader) was installed on the hard drive instead of the USB drive. Without the USB drive inserted into the computer grub can not find some necessary files that are in the /boot directory and the result is the grub rescue prompt as posted.

By running blkid you should which drive i.e. sda or sdb is the USB drive since you will see linux file system i.e ext4 vs NTFS partitions.
/sbin/blkid

To install grub to the USB drive run the following commands as root. I assume that your USB drive will be recognized as sdb.

grub-install /dev/sdb

update-grub

While windows is booted you should be able to fix the boot loader via the console command
bootrec /fixmbr

It might be a good idea to create a windows repair disk.
