Linuxhelp _ General Discussion _ Free Software For Windows

Posted by: Corey Jun 22 2004, 07:59 AM

In our daily lives, we are often stuck with using Windows wether it be at work, school, or on a computer in which we have no choice on what operating system to run. Because we are all smart people, we know the benefit and freedom that free software gives us. I thought I would start a thread that would give people ideas on what free software is available for Windows. Please reply with any suggestions you may have as well.

I have FireFox on every Windows PC they will let me put it on!

I use The Gimp on many windows machines as well.

I actually like MS Office, and I have to use it reguardless at work (Several custom MS Outlook forms and MS Access proprietary stuff).

At home, the only thing I do on Windows is make sure my wife can print from her XP machine. The only time I use my windows machine is to make sure my website works with IE and to install updates. (I have a Win2000 Domain controller and 3 XP PCs (1 workstation each for me, my wife and my daughter)... and 4 Linux PCs (My workstation, 2 servers and a test box). Did I mention my 2 Linux Laptops?

4+3+2 = 9 PCs ....it's kind of silly actually. 7 of them are right beside my desk!

Joey,

You should probably try SUSE 9.1 with the Ximian desktop. It looks pretty good. I work on MS 2000/XP/server 2003 all day, so at home I do Linux only...

I religiously use Mozilla, thunderbird and Firebird. I will NOT use IE, its such a death trap for spyware. I dont trust outlook at all.

Im newer to linux but so far I havnt booted my windows in a few weeks ive been running Mandrake 10 and love it. I havnt tried Suse yet and I dropped KDE cause of some problems with programs slowing down and am using Gnome as of now.

Got any windows programs I need running on linux, I just could get used to Gimp so I got photoshop 7 running just fine and CDex.

I do suppose since I clean spyware and virus's constantly at work it does make me absoultely sick to my stomach to see a windows machine. Ive had 3 XP machines in the past week I could absolutely not get past the Loading screen in safe mode or anything, repair doesnt work worth a crap and I end up backing up the files and formatting. *shutter*

This job really pushed me to linux at home. Given away a few copies of Knoppix at work.
