Linuxhelp _ Polls _ Which Distro

Posted by: Hemant Oct 14 2004, 08:43 AM

It's been a while..since a poll has been put up in this area.
My goodness..i had to think a lot..what poll to put??.then i stumbled on this simple and obvious question missing. So here is the poll!!

Time for fireworks..feel free to bash any distro while making love with other.

Honestly..i am not eligble to vote in this poll.Becuase i have never used anything out of Redhat family.Once i tried installing Debian..but that was quite old and it didn't recognise anything on my computer.

Now a days..i am trying to get Gentoo..but it is really hard to get distros on a cd in india.(And i don't have luxury of a broadband connection.)And i am lazy also...don't want to change setup frequently.

Hi,

awww...where is Whitebox ? smile.gif

I've tried Fedora Core (was the biggest mistake of my life to install it as a server...samba print server...) , then I tried Suse twice...but it's just not for me...I even tried Slackware...but still, I like Whitebox 3.0 the best smile.gif

Sincerely

I would have to pick WhiteBox / CentOS as a server as well ....

And Gentoo as a Workstation (I voted for gentoo...)

Started on Red Hat, moved to Mandrake (loved that for a wile) than moved to Gentoo. Tried Fedora, Slackware, SuSE. Use Debian in the labs here at school, even use Solaris (I know thats not exactly linux).

So far, I think that Gentoo has been my favorite. I am all about having control over my system, and no other distro that I have used even comes close to giving you as much control as Gentoo and the emerge system.

Obviously since Hughes and I both agree that Gentoo is the best workstation distro this debate is over. Now that you have heard from me we can just close down the poll and anounce Gentoo the winner.

i love Mandrake and stay with that out of habbit but i also like to try other Distros, i Escpecially like Home spun Distros versus Corprate made distros due to the fact they always seem to add little unexpected things that make it unique and special.

Hell i will be honest, i Collect OS's to date i have one Copy of Windows ever made as well as One copy of Every Dos Ever made and i am happy that with linux i will never run out of OS variation to collect, now if i could just get my hands on every CP/M ever made and GEM OS versions 1 - 4 i would be happy.

Wow man,FC and Mandrake neck to neck..

i agree slackware all the way fedora core 2 made me feel like my old 486 was fast

Fedora and mandrake are neck and neck cause they both are very very easy to set up. plus with redhats books out there with the full dvd of crap for fedora 2 its no wonder people are starting with it and sticking with what they know, i for one couldn't deal with the slow speeds

I still say Mandrake is a good distro even though I moved onto Gentoo. Mandrake is like linux with training wheels on it. When you start its great to have the easy install and the graphical config. Then as you advance, you can shed the training wheels and do a little more by hand, but its still a beginers bike even with the training wheels off.

Ounce you get to a certian level I think you want to be using something like Gentoo, Slackware, or SuSE, a little more "hardcore" linux. The thing I love about Gentoo though is there websight. They have such wonderful guides that make the really difficult processes of building a system from stage 1 up pretty easy.

No matter how you cut it, there are certian distros that are like the BMW, Lexus, and Mecadies of linux, ounce you get up that high, its splitting hairs and a matter of personal choice and loyalty.

Gentoo is groovy - I love portage, it's so much easier to use than RPM, and hasnt gone wrong yet (touch wood). I use Gentoo as a server, and mandrake for the desktops. That way I can get the server working very reliably, but maintain the desktops quickly and easily. Mandrake ControlCentre easily betas Windows Control Panel (especially the XP one, who's idea was it to split up the network config into individual connections???)

I got bored of Fedora, the package mager is completely useless, the version of openoffice they shipped in FC2 was very unreliable, and the priting support was a bit poor. If they cant make their distribution work weel out of the box, im not going to go poking around tweaking things and doing it for them. That's what I like about Gentoo, it does work out of the box, mianly because you unpack it all yourself, amking sure everything is there and making sure you aren't missing any screws.

That is quite enough furniture metaphor...
