Linuxhelp _ Hardware Support _ USB drive problems in Mandriva

Posted by: Eldavidos Jul 23 2006, 03:25 AM

Hello

I'm quite new to the wonderful world of Linux. I have the latest Mandriva distro and its up to date, but whenever I write to a USB drive or any drive that is accessed through the USB port it does not save the data. Instead, when I re-insert the USB drive it appears emptgy. The only exception to this is with my camera which instead says I don't have permission (which I do according to all menus).

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here and what I should do to rectify it?

When wrriting to USB, the data gets buffered first to speed up the process and stop the user-space programs from hanging. The kernel then does the ACTUAL wriiting gradually. Generally, if you can unmount the drive properly then it has finished writing - Just unplugging it is a bit risky.

If you CAN unmount it properly, nd you still get the problem, then it might be something else. Have a look at the stick-topic in this forum and try to find out the information lsited in there for USB problems.
