Linuxhelp _ Hardware Support _ 3com Nic Support Problems...

Posted by: Bandito Feb 4 2004, 11:13 PM

Hi,
I'm new to linux and just installed arjanv's precompiled kernel-2.6.1-1.149.rpm on fedora core 1 to solve problems with my sound card and NIC.
My eth is a 3Com 3C920B-EMB-WNM Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller, and was unsupported before the 2.5.70 kernel. After upgrading to 2.6 i now dont get any moaning at startup about eth, but i still cant activate it...

ifconfig eth0 dhclient up, does nothing, and in ifconfig only lo interface is there, no eth0?
With dhclient eth0, i get:

sit0: unknown hardware address type 776
SOICSIFADDR: no such device
eth0: unknown interface: no such device
eth0: unknown interface: no such device
sit0: unknown hardware address type 776
bind socket to interface:no such device

??? My mobo is an asus P4R-800VM.

Any advice would be VERY apprieciated... Thnx.

Bandito.

What happens if you try:

/etc/init.d/network restart

If that doesn't work ... what does it say in:
-------------------------------------------
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0

mine says:

CODE
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet

------------------------------------------
Also check your /etc/modules.conf file and look at the alias line for eth0 ... does it list the correct module? Mine says:

alias eth0 e1000
(I have a gigabit intel controller ... but yours should have the module for your card there)
